Derek Johnson

Derek Johnson is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and educator active in the world of contemporary concert music and beyond. His compositions been performed throughout the United States and Canada by leading soloists and ensembles including composer/pianist Timo Andres, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW and Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. Since 2011, Derek has been engaged in a series of ongoing collaborations with Indianapolis based singer/songwriters Christian Taylor and Caleb McCoach, and is currently the drummer for Taylor’s Ampersand Blues Band and Caleb McCoach &Band. He has served as a faculty member in the music department of Columbia College Chicago, as an Associate Instructor of Composition at Indiana University’s Jacob School of Music, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the Ball State University School of Music, and as chamber music faculty at the Bang On A Can Institute at MassMOCA and Moscow.

Derek is also an avid transcriber and is currently working in collaboration with the innovative Swedish metal band Meshuggah on a series of note-for-note transcriptions of their complete discography.
